In Sunset Serenade, a solitary tree stands quietly beneath an expansive sky layered with deep blue, crimson, coral and flashes of luminous gold. Broad, expressive marks capture the movement and changing character of the light, allowing the sky to dominate the landscape and create its own sense of rhythm.
The work explores the meeting of energy and calm that draws me repeatedly to dramatic skies. Colour moves and shifts across the canvas with intensity, while the tree remains grounded and still beneath it. Inspired by the colours and atmosphere of Africa, and connected to my own experience of South Australian skies, the painting seeks to capture not simply the appearance of sunset, but the feeling of being present as the landscape is transformed by light.
