In Scarlet Skies, silhouetted trees move across the horizon beneath a sky shifting from luminous yellow and orange through brilliant scarlet into deep blue. The changing bands of colour create a sense of a landscape caught at that fleeting point when daylight gives way to dusk.
The trees form their own rhythm across the foreground, each with a different character and gesture. Against the intensity of the sky, their dark forms give the painting a sense of grounding and stillness, allowing colour and light to become the real protagonists.
