A vast, fiery sky unfolds behind the dark silhouette of a solitary tree in Fiery Canopy. Layers of orange, scarlet, gold and deep blue capture the drama of changing light, while the strong horizontal format creates a sense of an expansive landscape stretching beyond the canvas.

Inspired by the colours and atmosphere of Africa, the work also draws on my own experience of South Australian light and its capacity to transform a familiar landscape. It is less about depicting a particular place than capturing the sensation of standing beneath an immense, colour-filled sky.
Fiery Canopy was a finalist in the 2024 Mark Butler Art Prize.
